At Oliver's time, orphans were treated dreadfully by their host families.
They thought they weren't supposed to take care of them like they would have done if they were their own children. They gave them not as much food as they needed, so the orphans were always starving.
They made them work as hard as an adult should work but in terrible conditions that threatened their health and they life.
They didn't even have a proper place to sleep and their host families didn't give them much place to do so.
In many cases, the orphans didn't have the chance to grow up in a regular house, so they had to stay in the workhouses, where they had to work harder, they could eat less food and they had to share everything with a lot of children that didn't have another place to go.
Unfortunately, all the children living in that period of time, excluding the rich ones, didn't have any chances to be safe and happy, as they didn't have any rights protecting them and their daily situations were extremely difficult.
